In January 2007, Steve Jobs released the first iPhone and our society changed as we know it. We began to rely more and more on our mobile devices for many things: calendar, clock, email and even the usage of social media. In 2009, a survey was given to adolescents. The results were very interesting. It was found that 11-14-year-olds spent an average of 60 hours a week and 15-18-year-olds spent an average of 56 hours a week engaged in the digital world. Although this survey is outdated, the results show that adolescents are plugged into screen time. Of course, imagine what the results would be now today if the hours included online streaming subscriptions such as Netflix, Hulu or even Amazon and with the many different social media platforms readily available!
More and more our world is consumed with digital devices. Many younger individuals use social media to stay connected with others. The use of social media has given many individuals the opportunity to stay connected to family, friends and even fans from all around the world. Social media has been powerful in keeping people updated on their personal life and even giving people the unique opportunity to stay updated on the release of products. I have found that this has been a great way to connect with my readers.
There are many social media platforms and each one serves a different purpose. It is hard to find out what which one is the “magic” social media platform. But, one thing to keep in mind is that engagement is key to staying connected with all of my readers!
